고전캐롤, 현대캐롤 많은 곡들 중 연배가 다소 높은 축에 속한다는 
The Cherry Tree Carol을 들어보자. 요셉과 마리아가 체리나무 과수원을
걷다가 벌어지는 상황을 묘사한 곡이다. 버전에 따라 가사는 차이를 보인다.

Joseph was an old man, an old man was he,
 When he married Virgin Mary, the Queen of Galilee.
요셉이 나이 들어서 갈릴리의 처녀 마리아와 결혼을 했어요

 As Mary and Joseph were walking one day
 To an orchard of cherry trees they happened to stray.
어느날 마리아와 요셉이 체리나무 과수원을 걷는데

 Then Mary said to Joseph, so meek and so mild,
 “Pick me some cherries, Joseph, for I am with child.”
마리아가 요셉에게 온화하고 부드러운 목소리로 말했어요
'요셉, 나는 아이를 가졌어요. 체리를 조금 따다 주세요'

 Then Joseph flew angry, so angry flew he,
 “Let the father of your baby gather cherries for thee.”
그러자 요셉은 불같이 화를 내며 말했어요
'아이의 아버지에게 체리를 따달라고 해'

 The up spoke Lord Jesus from in his mother's womb,
 “Bow low down, cherry trees, bow down to the ground.”
마리아의 뱃 속에 있던 아기예수께서 말했어요
'체리나무들아! 가지를 숙여라!'

 And the cherry trees bowed down, bowed low to the ground,
 And Mary gathered cherries while Joseph stood round.
체리나무들이 땅에 닿도록 가지를 숙였어요
마리아가 체리를 따는 동안 요셉은 우두커니 서있었죠

 Then Joseph he kneeled down and a question gave he,
 “Come tell me, pretty baby, when your birthday shall be.”
요셉이 무릎을 꿇으며 아이에게 물었어요
'아가야 말해주렴 너는 언제 태어날거니'

 “On the fifth day of January my birthday shall be,
 And the stars in the heaven shall all bow down to me.”
'1월 다섯째날이 되면 태어날테고 하늘의 별들이 쏟아질거예요'
